What is the Difference? MD / MBBS
All Medical colleges follow eligibility criteria described by their affiliated university for MBBS admission in India. However, in general terms the candidates seeking admission to a medical college should have passed Senior Secondary Examination of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) or its equivalent with physics, chemistry, and Biology.
Admision to MBBS colleges in India is based on either merit or money. Generally, to get MBBS merit seat following are considered
Marks obtained in the competitive examinations conducted at central or state level.
Marks obtained in Senior Secondary Examination or Central Board of Secondary Education or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Botany and Zoology).
India(as on Oct,2014) has currently 398 medical colleges that trains 51,955 medical students as per registrations under Medical Council of India. Out of 398, 183 are government colleges and 215 are private colleges. 15% of all college seats are filled by central government and remaining seats are filled by state governments for government colleges. Fees for these government seats vary from 12,000 to 2,80,000 depending on the college, admission is sought. Based on the state where private colleges are located, 65% seats are filled by government and 35% seats are filled by private college management itself.
Tamilnadu tops the list with 45 medical colleges having a total of 5465 seats(Tamilnadu has more than 10% of total seats available in India).
Government follows reservation system during counselling for allocating seats for MBBS and BDS. Distribution of reservation is shown in the below figure
